As They Are
I came to this work through a simple conviction: the photographs that move us most are rarely the ones where everyone was looking at the camera.
The images I return to - from my own childhood, from the families I spend time with - are the ones that caught something true. A hand held. A small disagreement already forgotten. The after-dinner chaos. The quiet that settles at the end of a long day.
My name is Michelle. I'm a documentary family photographer based in Durbanville, working with families across Cape Town, the northern suburbs, and the surrounding Winelands. I document the life a family is living during a particular season - I don't arrange it, I don't direct it. I simply bear witness to it.
I work slowly. I don't pose. I arrive, settle into the background, and wait - for the moment a child forgets I'm there, for the gesture that happens a hundred times a week and will one day be the thing someone misses most.
What emerges is closer to a visual family history than a set of portraits: something to return to as the years pass, to share with the people who weren't there, and one day to pass down.
The approach
Sessions take place in your home, your garden, or a place that holds meaning for your family - the particular light in your kitchen, the garden your children know by heart, a favourite walk, a Sunday ritual.
I work entirely in natural light, and keep the atmosphere calm and unhurried for you, and for your children, who will soon forget I'm there.
The editing is careful and restrained: true to the light of the day, free of heavy processing, and made to stay beautiful for decades.
Every commission is delivered as a private gallery of carefully curated images, available to download in high resolution and sized for printing at any scale.
On ordinary days
We tend to photograph the occasions the birthdays, the milestones, the moments that announce themselves.
But the life that accumulates between them - the afternoons that blur together, the routines that feel endless while you're in them - is often the part people miss most when it passes.
A commission with As They Are is a record of that life. Not a set of photographs, but an honest document of who your family was, and what it felt like to be together, during this particular chapter.
